It all started one February afternoon, when a couple named Karen & Ken, contacted me about photographing their destination wedding in Cuba. They said that they browsed through my blog for over an hour and loved my photos. We dialogued back and forth over e-mail and they wanted to meet soon. I really liked their enthusiasm!
Together with 25 of their closest friends and family members, they were planning an intimate wedding at the Ocean Varadero El Patriarca Resort in July. A beautiful new resort on the tip of the Varadero peninsula.
The anticipated meeting arrived but due to the snow storm that evening, they chose a busy restaurant near me to make things more convenient. As I trudged through the newly fallen snow to meet Karen & Ken, I began to wonder if I’d be able to spot them easily. I scanned the restaurant for couples with the usual telltale signs: sitting at a table for more than two, expectant glances towards the front door, and/or maybe holding a notebook in hand to jot down notes.
I scanned the room. To my surprise, I spotted fellow photographers Lucy Chang & Kevin Fung! Both of whom are talented photographers and dear colleagues of mine! What a coincidence, why were they here?
As I excitedly scanned the room again, no other couples in the room exhibited those ‘telltale signs’. Lucy & Kevin were, in fact, the only ones looking in the direction of the front door. They seemed to be expecting me.
Then it clicked.
A smile crept over my face as I slowly realized the elaborate foil that Lucy & Kevin had set up to surprise me. I still hadn’t moved a step from the front door, but after seeing their equally big smiles from across the room I knew that they had got me good!
Their grand wedding adventure consisted of four celebrations across the globe. There were the reception dinners held in China & Taiwan for overseas family, the Toronto banquet, and of course, the destination wedding in Cuba.
It goes without saying that photographing for two fellow photographers can be a lot of pressure. Naturally their expectations are going to be higher. But I thrive on the pressure and had a blast photographing this wedding. I think these photos show just how much fun we all had that week in Varadero.
It was such an incredible journey and honour to be chosen to photograph their wedding celebration.
